Have you ever watched movies or documentaries that feature scuba divers effortlessly swimming over stunning underwater reefscapes and wished that was you? Is learning to scuba dive on your bucket list?
Imagine gliding over vibrant coral reefs as clouds of colourful fish dance before your eyes and graceful manta rays soar overhead. That’s just what it’s like when you learn to dive in Nusa Lembongan. We are extremely fortunate to be surrounded by some of the healthiest and most productive coral reefs in Bali – and they are just waiting to be explored!
In this article, we take a deeper look into learning to dive and how to get certified as a PADI Open Water Diver in Bali…
What is the PADI Open Water Diver Course?
The PADI Open Water Course is the first level of autonomous diving certification. This simply means that once you have completed your course, you’ll be able to go diving with a ‘buddy’ (another certified diver) and you will not need to be accompanied by an instructor or other professional diver.
You’ll learn how to become a safe, competent, and confident diver AND you’ll have a lifelong certification to dive to a maximum depth of 18 meters. When you complete your PADI Open Water Diver Course on Nusa Lembongan you’ll be ready for a lifetime of incredible underwater experiences, exploration, and adventures.
Can Anyone Take the PADI Open Water Diver Course?
The good news is that, YES, almost anyone can take the PADI Open Water Diver Course. To learn to dive with us, you must be aged 12 years or above to start the course and if aged under 16 you will need a parent or guardian to consent for you. No previous diving experience is required but you should be in good general health and have a reasonable level of fitness. You do not need to be an Olympic swimmer, however, you should be able to maintain yourself comfortably in the water.
What Does the PADI Open Water Diver Course Involve?
The PADI Open Water Course is divided into 3 components:
(1) Knowledge Development (dive theory)
(2) Confined Water Dives (dives in our purpose built dive training pool)
(3) Open Water Dives (dives in the ocean)
Let’s take a more in depth look at each of these 3 components…
Knowledge Development
This is where you learn about the theory of diving. There are two options for completing this component.
i) PADI E-Learning: PADI E-Learning allows you to study the Knowledge Development sessions online before you leave home. E-Learning allows you to work at your own pace and fit your studying around any existing commitments such as school, work, and family etc.
When you arrive at the dive centre you’ll complete a ‘Quick Review’ (quiz) to check your understanding and the next three days will be packed with time underwater. You won’t need to spend your holiday in a classroom because you already completed your studying at home. Now is the time practice what you have learned – and have fun!
ii) Study in Nusa Lembongan: For those who do not have time to complete eLearning before leaving home (also for those who decide spontaneously to take the course once already on the island), you can study the theory while you are here. This can be via PADI eLearning or a series of educational videos and the PADI Open Water Diver student manual. If you are studying with a manual, you must also complete a multiple choice final exam.
Confined Water Dives
These are sessions in our onsite purpose-built dive training pool. You’ll learn and practice basic diving skills and techniques to keep you safe. You’ll also practice the skills, drills, and techniques for dealing with emergencies, should they occur. Our PADI Instructors are extremely patient and professional, if there is anything you find challenging, they will support you and you will work through it together.
During your pool sessions, you’ll gain familiarity with your equipment (full gear hire is included in our course prices), and you’ll start to develop confidence in your abilities underwater. You’ll finish each session with a sense of accomplishment – enjoy it because you deserve it!!
Open Water Dives
This is what it’s all about! During your course, you’ll make 4 dives in the ocean. During each of the dives, you’ll show your instructor that you can also execute the skills you learned in the pool, in open water. Nothing new will be introduced at this stage – the learning is done!
In between your skills, you’ll enjoy ‘real’ scuba diving and you’ll be mesmerized as the incredible underwater world reveals more and more! You’ll also experience what it’s like going out on a boat diving trip and you’ll be a part of the camaraderie that our divers and crew have on board. It’s a LOT of fun!
